The tastiest ways to sweeten the festivities
Anyway, do you hear that? That faint voice from afar, it’s whispering something. I think it’s saying…“yusuuf taiyoooob.”
Awwww yess! The famous Yusuf Taiyoob commercial should be making its rounds anytime on the radio soon, and that signals one thing: Hari Raya is approaching!
Well, if you’re reading this now then not quite yet la…there’s still just over 2 weeks left of Ramadhan. But still, the anticipation is heightening with each passing day. As you prepare your baju raya and ketupat raya decos, you’ll probably also thinking of what you should cook for the celebration. And, chances are, you’ll have a bountiful supply of kurma adding up from office hampers and neighbourly gifts.
Unless you’re a hardcore kurma addict, eating dates as it is can get pretty jelak. So what should you do you with them? Force-eating is too much a hassle and not worth it, and neglecting them till expiration is wasteful. What we recommend, is whipping out a kurma-based recipe that’s tasty, not jelak, and fit for the festivities.
For starters, here are 7 delicious date recipes you can try.
Stuffed Coated Dates
The name itself is pretty self-explanatory isn’t it? Stuff the dates, then coat em’. As to what you’d like to stuff or coat them with, that’s entirely up to you. That’s what makes this recipe fun! Let the kurma be a canvas of experimentation.
TIP: chocolate is, and always will be the crowd favourite. 😉
Energy Date Balls
Is this the remedy for a lethargically slow day? It just might. An accurate way to describe these energy balls would be to say they are like energy bars, except rounder. And instead of spending a whopping amount for a measly 3-bar packet, these kurma balls are much cheaper. The video will show you three flavours: Cacao Almond, Cashew Tahini, and Walnut Cranberries. Enjoy!
Date Oatmeal Squares
Date oatmeal squares are flaky, fulfilling, and sweet – which adds up to it being the perfect dessert to complement a savoury main course. The lovely combination of a crunchy layer with a soft middle will send your hearts fluttering.
Dark Chocolate Walnut Date Bars
Healthy AND sweet? Count us in. This recipe is high in proteins from the walnut and peanut butter (yes, there is peanut butter!!) and antioxidants from the dark chocolate. So eat away without feeling a single pang of guilt, but of course, too much of one thing is never good ya.
Healthy Date Bars
If you’re not a fan of the bitter-ish tinge of dark chocolate, no worries. Here’s an alternate recipe that uses cocoa powder and desiccated coconut instead. Don’t worry, the peanut butter is still included.
Dates are fruits, and fruits make the best type of smoothies. That means there’s absolutely no way we were going to leave out a smoothie recipe. Here are two recipes to start you off with: A date & banana smoothie, and a figs and dates milkshake. Slurp away!
Dates Halwa is a popular Indian dessert that has a jelly-like, springy texture. It requires breaking down the dates into sweet paste, then thickening it with ghee until it has a solid shape. Wonder what it tastes like? Only one way to find out!
