Anyone familiar with this classic Disney one-liner? Oh and how true it is too!
Much of our travel these days revolve around going to pretty places for the ‘Gram, but how much do we actually experience?
Picking up a productive hobby is a good motive to have in life, but it will work wonders if it uplifts your travel experience to new heights. So if you’re looking for a hobby that’s both beneficial to you and your travels, here are some which you can pursue in 2021.
You know what they say, be a traveller, not a tourist!
Hiking and trekking is undeniably one of the best hobbies to pick up, especially if you spend most of your time in the city.
Certain routes vary in difficulty, and you may need to cash out on proper shoes and equipment – a small investment for invaluable returns.
Fortunately for us Malaysians, we’re always only a drive away from the next hill or mountain (the perks of living in a small country). You’ll grow in confidence with each peak you conquer, and perhaps will even plan hiking trips overseas! And soon enough, Everest maybe?
Camping is a great hobby for those that admire the great outdoors. And it’s also a skill that not many possess. I mean, have you tried pitching a tent or starting a fire?
Yes, it is far from the luxury hotels and the high-speed WiFi we’re so used to having. But camping offers a front-row view of nature’s best show – the stars!
And in case you didn’t know, Malaysia does have camping expeditions like the ones organized by Taman Negara. But don’t be afraid to expand your horizons by venturing out on your own.
Once you’re a seasoned camper, you might even find yourself on a backpacking journey across the globe.
Astrophotography, landscape photography, portrait photography, street photography, mountain photography, smartphone photography.
There are an abundant artistic forms of photography that are beneficial to your travels. Even if you were practising it casually, bringing your skills to holiday trips will guarantee an album full of aesthetic memories to look back on.
A plus if you’re landscape or astrophotographer who knows how to camp. You’ll be comfortable going to new locations to capture sceneries no man has seen before!
Writing & Journaling
One of the best ways to capture highlights of your travel is by penning them down on a journal. Some will even tell you journaling is therapeutic as it allows you to relive and encapsulate fond moments throughout your travels.
Years down the road, when you’ve got cabinets full of memories, you’ll see these stories as a testament to a life well lived.
If your writings are interesting enough, you might be able to publish them as a book!
The spice of life never runs out!
Tasting the cuisines and delicacies is a great way to immerse yourself in a foreign culture. But even more so when you are able to cook!
There’s no need to be a gourmet or Michelin star chef. Just as long as you’ve got the knack for cooking and a willingness to be curious, then the world of cooking is your oyster!
Here’s one hobby that has been on trend the past few years.
For us camera-shy folks, vlogging seems something wayyy out of reach, but it is a unique and special way to document your travels. Not only that, but you would’ve built a certain level of confidence from all the speaking!
If you are doing so with an intention to garner followers on social media, you will need a decent enough camera and a competent eye for videography. But if it’s for your own personal keeping, then whatever works best will do.
Much like how marathon runners participate in runs internationally, cyclists travel the globe to explore new tracks.
Imagine cruising through the streets of Amsterdam, or whizzing down the mountainside on empty roads in Iceland. Oh, one can only dream! Maybe after all this is over and borders have reopened ya guys.
We totally get it if going deep down into dark waters is not your thing. We know, it’s a legitimate fear.
However, if you’re keen on pushing boundaries and trying something new, then Scuba Diving is the way to go. Many divers speak about exploring a whole new world in the ocean, and some may even tell you the experience is life changing.
Do keep in mind that you’ll need to get a diving certification, so make sure you have gone through the necessary tests and have earned the certification!
